Year 991 is CMXCI. Pope John XV ratifies the first <em>Truce of God</em> between the Æthelred the Unready and Richard I of Normandy. The Viking run havoc on on both side of the North Sea, such as on England, Germany, Netherlands and France. Olaf Tryggvason has raids at the mouth of the River Thames as told in the Old English poem <em>The Battle of Maldon</em>. Æthelred the Unready pays 22,000 pounds of silver for Tryggvason to withdraw his troops in the first of a series of Danegelds. Mount Vesuvius erupts again.
